Bio Menace Episode Two

Lately, Ive been playing a lot of games from 1993. It must have been a really good year for gaming, because companies like Apogee were cutting them out like no other. Bio Menace is a 2D sidescroller similar to the original Duke Nukem which came out in 1991, only with several updates. It uses the Commander Keen engine, which was also released in 91, but plays with much more aggressiveness than the retarded kid with a helmet. Youre Snake Logan, and youve been sent to check out the mutants invading the city. Thats right, Pliskins not the only Snake in town. This guy sporting a V-neck and mullet has been here a long time.

Gameplay: 7/10
Okay, heres what sucks. You cant move while you shoot, and you cant point upward. -1 point for each of those. Otherwise, the jumping controls feel pretty nice, and the action never really stops. Theres lots of platforming going on in this game, hopping around through cities and forests, also theres lots of shooting going on. At least they were decent enough to allow you to duck and shoot, which youre going to be doing frequently, because 50% of the enemies are too short to hit while youre standing up. Every now and then you have to find a crystal or key to open the door, which is amazingly cliche, but whats a sidescroller like this without it? Of course, youre going to be picking up some powerups, which will do stuff like increase your fire rate or bullet damage. Theres also a few types of grenades to use. Additionally, you have a few "secret" combinations that allow you to use the plasma shot, shield, and some others. The levels are usually self-explanatory enough to let you just blast through it on your first try, and not have to run around trying to discover your way, but sometimes you have to open up a bunch of doors to find the crystal you need to proceed, and those require keys, so you get whats gonna happen. -1 point for that.

Graphics: 7/10
Hey man, theyre good, and the game runs pretty smooth to boot. The level graphics are great and the game portrays itself very well. Theres some things that bother me, like why all the monsters are so cute. Blobs, smiley dinosaurs, robots and such. -3 points for that but hey, at least they blow up with a satisfying gib.

Sound: 8/10
Lots of high quality digitized sound and sweet adlib tunes keeps your ears entertained. Theres lots of explosions and gunfire, but the music sounds a bit random, so I bit off 2 points.

Overall: 9/10

The secret Apogee room, portrait of a hero

Its really a great game, despite the fact that youre some creepo with a mustache. Wait... a... minute, isnt that Carlos Santana? What are you doin disguising yourself as Snake Logan trying to shoot a bunch of cute monsters? Did you take mescaline again? Oh look, youve wandered into the secret Apogee room, where they were keeping all the spare Duke Nukem and Commander Keen items! Looks like theyre working on a game thats going to blow you out of the water in the near future and everyones gonna forget about you! Its alright, Bio Menace, you had a good run, and it was fun to see you again. Have a good one.

ZZT

ZZT was released commercially in 1991. It was pretty far behind as far as graphics and sound went, but extremely rich in the creative element. You see, ZZT had a built-in game editor that you could use to make your very own adventures, however you wish. Theres a ton of preset tiles, enemies, items and the like, or you can create your own objects using ZZTs language, ZZT-OOP. The game became a popular community experience, as users would create their own games and tweak ZZT for years. The four games that come prepackaged with ZZT are rubbish compared to some of the community games.

Gameplay: ???/10
Rating the gameplay with ZZT is impossible. If I were to review the one of the four games that game with it, say, Town of ZZT, Id be giving this a pretty horrible rating. But thats not where the awesomeness lies in ZZT. The editor is very basic to learn, but extremely difficult to master, and with enough time playing around with it, you can do some pretty neat things. The enemies that are preprogrammed in ZZT are worthless when you learn how to make your own.

Graphics: ???/10
Again, its really hard to rate the graphics. You see, by most standards, ZZT has horrible graphics and not very many capabilities. However, users have created some brilliant works, figuring out how to bypass the natural limitations of ZZT. Ive seen some badly drawn stuff and Ive seen stuff with color and shading. When it comes to ZZT, its what you make it.

Sound: 4/10
ZZTs sound comes from a PC speaker. Back when they still had them. My PC would be beeping and booping little tunes that users had created using the difficult-but not impossible music code. Otherwise, ZZTs sound effects sound like this: Beep. Bop. Bonk. Click. Thats about it. -6 points for superannoying.

Overall: 10/10
ZZT is badass. Thats all there is to it. You can tell whatever story you want, make your game play how you want, and make the art good or bad. ZZTs limitations are its strengths, the real secret is pushing past them and doing something extraordinary for the game. Some of the best games were made by other ZZT users throughout the years, you can hop over to Z2, a community of ZZT users, download the game and get started immediately.

is basically a run-of-the-mill Asteroids clone, but with a few twists: instead of asteroids youve got monsters of sorts to shoot at, there are power ups (two kinds of weapons) and shields (which means a single blow doesnt kill you), and you can also set whether or not you want momentum enabled, which gives an interesting edge to the game.
